The Road Is Calling: Make Sure Your Car Is Ready

Family preparing for road tripThe holiday season is right around the corner, which means road trips to see family and friends are on the horizon. Before heading out on your next adventure, check your vehicle to prevent any time in the repair shop. To ensure your car is performing at peak performance, follow these car maintenance tasks

When you are between routine services, checking your battery is a good idea. First, make sure all cables and terminals have good contact and are snug. If they are dirty or have a lot of corrosion, we recommend cleaning them with a wire brush or cleaning tool. If you do not feel comfortable cleaning your battery yourself, you can always bring it in, and we can assist you.

Fluids and Filters

Checking all your car’s fluids before hitting the road can seem overwhelming. Here’s a list of fluid levels that should be filled to the car manufacturer’s recommended level: brake, automatic transmission or clutch, power steering, windshield washer, and coolant. Cleaning the engine air filter has positive impacts on your car’s acceleration performance. Make sure you double-check that no dust or debris is preventing your car from running smoothly.

Be aware of the warning signs your vehicle is giving you when your brakes are not functioning properly. Some warning signs include noisy brakes, a vibrating steering wheel, and warning lights are your dashboard. If you are experiencing any of those indications, come by for an inspection.

Before heading out, add checking your tire pressure to the to-list. Make sure your tires are at the recommended pressure. To find that information, look inside the driver’s door or owner’s manual. Pro tip: Always check your car’s spare tire when checking everything else. Tire inflation doesn’t just help you avoid sitting on the side of the road with a flat tire. It also impacts your car’s fuel economy! While inspecting your tire’s pressure, use the penny method to check your tire tread. On every tire, place the penny upside down between the treads. It’s time to rotate or realign your tires if you can see the top of Abraham Lincoln’s head on the penny.
